الثالوث المقدس عند الملحدين

ماذا لو قُدّر للملحديين أن يختاروا ثالوثا مقدسا لعبادته على غرار الثالوث المقدس عند المسيحيين؟ للوهلة الأولى يمكننا الجزم بأن أي نوع من العبادة يتنافى مع مبدأ الإلحاد. وتنم بذلك فكرة إتخاذ الملحديين آلهة عن نوع من التناقض أو تصبح مدعاة إلى السخرية. ولكن إذا نظرنا إلى الأمر بشكل أكثر جدّية لوجدنا أن للإلحاد في المفهوم المعاصر عدة تعاريف. أحد هذه التعاريف هو عدم الإيمان "بالإله الشخصي"، أي الإله عند الديانات الإبراهيمية الذي خُلق على صورة الإنسان. هذا الإله الذي يغضب وينتقم ويحب ويسامح بل ويبذل جهدا في إدارة أموره حتى أنه إضطر إلى الإستراحة يوما كاملا بعد خلق الكون. أما الأسباب التي أدت إلى بروز هذا النمط الجديد من الإلحاد، فتعود برأيي وبالدرجة الأولى إلى إحتكار الديانات الإبراهيمية لإسم الله (god) مما يجعل مفهوم كلمة الله في يومنا هذا مرتبطا إرتباطا حصريا بالإله الشخصي. مثلا، عندما قال أنشتاين أن "الله لا يلعب النرد مع الكون" إستُغلت هذه العبارة الشهيرة للترويج بأن أنشتاين كان يؤمن بالله وفقا للصورة التوراتية (الإنجيلية). ولكنّ أنشتاين وضّح مرارا وبشكل صريح وحازم أنه لا يؤمن بإله اليهود (المسيحيين). ومن أجمل ما قاله أنشتاين في نقض خرافة الإله الشخصي الإبراهيمية هي العبارة الموجودة (بالإنكليزية) في عنوان هذه المدونة: "لا أستطيع أن أتصور إلهاً يكافئ ويعاقب مخلوقاته، إلهاً يحدد أهدافه وفقا لأهدافنا نحن البشر، إلهاً هو باختصار انعكاس لضعفنا البشري. كما أنني لا أستطيع أن أصدق بأن الإنسان يستمر بعد موت جسده، مع أن الكثير من ضعفاء النفوس يؤمنون بذلك أما بدافع الخوف أو بدافع النرجسية البلهاء."

إن إله أنشتاين إذا هو أبعد ما يكون عن الإله الشخصي في الديانات الإبراهيمية. إله أنشتاين ربما هو القانون الفيزيائي الذي يسيّر هذا الكون. ووفقا لهذا التعريف لا يصبح الإختلاف كبيرا بين من أنكر وجود علة أولى أي الملحد في التعريف الضيق للكلمة، ومن إعتقد أن العلة تكمن في القوانين الفيزيائية نفسها. وقد تكلم دوكينز عن هذا المفهوم للإيمان في كتابه "وهم الإله"، عندما قال: "أنا أيضا مؤمن... ولكني أفضل أن لا أصف نفسي بالمؤمن لأن ذلك الوصف مضلل. إنه مضلل بشكل كبير لأن الإيمان عند معظم الناس يرتبط بالأشياء الخارقة للطبيعة." ويكمل دوكنز: "لقد أجاد كارل سغان الوصف عندما قال: إذا قصدنا بكلمة الله القانون الفيزيائي المسيّر للكون، فهذا الإله هو حتما موجود. ولكن هذا الإله غير مرضي على المستوى العاطفي... لأنه من غير المجدي مثلا أن نصلي لقانون الجاذبية."

لنعد الآن إلى الطرح الأول، أي فكرة إتخاذ ثالوث مقدس للملحدين. صار بالإمكان عدم تناقض هذه الفكرة مع مبدأ الإلحاد شرط الإبتعاد عن التوصيفات الشخصية للآلهة. وبما أننا في عصر متمدن نسبيا قياسا بالحقبة الزمنية التي شهدت ولادة الثالوث المسيحي، فأنا أجزم أننا كملحديين نستطيع أن نأتي بثالوث أفضل وأكثر فائدة من الثالوث المسيحي. نحن لا نبحث عن آلهة لتحدد ما نأكل وما نشرب ومع من نمارس الجنس وكيف نقسم الإرث، إلخ. بل نطمح إلى آلهة تستطيع الإجابة، اما الآن أو في المستقبل، عن الأسئلة الثلاثة الكبرى في التاريخ البشري، وهي:
١. كيف وُجد الكون؟
٢. كيف إنبثقت الحياة من المادة؟
٣. لماذا نطرح نحن البشر هذين السؤالين الأولين؟

لا نملك اليوم جوابا عن أي من هذه الأسئلة الثلاثة. ولكن إن كان هناك من أمل ضئيل في معرفة جواب شاف لهذ الأسئلة فالفضل يعود بذلك إلى المعارف التالية:

١. الفيرياء:

إن كنت قد رأيت أبعد من غيري بقليل، فذلك لأني وقفت على أكتاف العمالقة. إسحق نيوتن

السؤال الأول مرتبط إرتباطا تاما بالفيزياء. الفيزياء هي أساس العلوم كافة وأجملها. روعة الفيزياء تكمن أنه من خلال بعض القوانين الأساسية نستطيع تفسير والتنبؤ بالكثير من الظواهر الطبيعية بدقة متناهية. طبعا لا تملك الفيزياء اليوم جوابا عن السؤال الأول، ولكن عدم امتلاك المعرفة الشاملة هو حافز مهم على مواصلة البحث العلمي بل إن عدم إمتلاك المعرفة هو أفضل بكثير من الإدعاء الزائف بالمعرفة. كما أنه لا يوجد في الفيزياء قوانين مقدسة أو أنبياء. فقد جاء أنشتاين بنظرية النسبية ليعالج ما عجزت عنه ميكانيكا نيوتن الكلاسيكية. ولكن ما جاء به أنشتاين ليس بنهائي. فما زال العلماء اليوم يبحثون عن نظرية جديدة توفّق بين النسبية والميكانيكا الكميّة. وهذا التطور المستمر الذي تتسم به مختلف العلوم يقف كنقيص تام للركود الذي تتسم به الديانات، حيث تضفى هالة القدسية على معتقدات بائدة مما يجعل نقدها أو تصحيحها أمرا مستحيلا.

٢. علم الأحياء

الجهل عادة ما يولد الثقة أكثر من المعرفة: هؤلاء الذين يعرفون قليلا لا كثيرا هم من يصر بثقة تامة أن معضلة ما لن يوجد لها تفسير علمي أبدا. شارلز داروين

علم الأحياء هو علم مستقل نسبيا عن الفيزياء وذلك بسبب التعقيد الكثير للجزيئات البيولوجية كالبروتينات. هذه الجزيئات تتكون من آلاف الذرات المتحدة كيميائيا، مما يجعل إستخدام الفيزياء الكمية لتحديد خصائصها صعبا للغاية. ولذلك يوصف علم الأحياء بأنه من علوم الظواهر (Phenomenology) لأنه غير منبي على القوانين الفيزيائية. هذا لا يعني أن الظواهر البيولوجية لا تتبع القوانين الفيزيائية. ولكن يصعب ربط هذه الظواهر بالقوانين الفيزيائية ربطا مباشرا. ولكن هذا العلم استطاع من خلال نظرية دارون للتطور أن يفسر تنوع الكائنات الحية وأن يردها جميعا إلى مصدر مشترك واحد، وبذلك نسف اسطورة الخلق الإبراهيمية. ولا نستبعد أن يؤدي التقدم في علم الأحياء في يوم من الأيام إلى الإجابة عن السؤال الثاني من خلال التجارب التي تطمح إلى خلق خلايا حية في المختبر.

٣. الفلسفة

لا أعرف كيفية تدريس الفلسفة دون أن أصبح مزعجاً للأديان. باروخ سبينوزا

قد يظن الكثير أن الفلسفة تتعاطى بمفاهيم مجردة لا تمت بصلة إلى الواقع ولا تؤثر على الحياة البشرية. ولكن للفلسفة قيمة عملية مهمة هي وضع الإسس الأخلاقية التي بنيت عليها الحضارات على مر الأزمان. هذه الأسس الأخلاقية التي سَرقت الديانات الإبراهيمية الكثير منها وادعتها لنفسها. وما يميز الفلسفلة على الأديان أن المعايير الأخلاقية تماما كالقوانين الفيزيائية في تطور مستمر. ففي زمن غير بعيد كانت المثيلية الجنسية تعتبر جرما. أما اليوم فقد أدركت معظم المجتمعات المتحضرة أن الخيار الجنسي هو أمر يندرج في خانة الحرية الشخصية. أما المجتمعات التي ما زالت تجرم المثيلية فهي تفعل ذلك بناء على تجريم المثيلية في الكتب المقدسة. وهي لا تستطيع بحكم تدينها الخروج عن هذا التجريم. نحن بأمس الحاجة إلى الفلسفة لمواكبة التطور العلمي المستمر وإعادة تقييم التجربة الإنسانية عند كل منعطف جديد.

ختاما، أنا بالطبع لا أملك البراهين على أن آلهتي الفلسفة وعلم الأحياء والفيزياء هم من خلق الكون. كما لا يملك المسيحيون البراهين على ضلوع الأب والإبن والروح القدس في عملية الخلق. ولكننا كلانا ندين لآلهتي أنا لتفسير مظاهر الطبيعة، للتكنولوجيا التي نستخدمها اليوم في كافة مجالات الحياة، للتطور الطبي في معالجة الأمراض والتقدم المستمر للحضارة البشرية. أما آلهتهم فهديتها إلى البشرية منذ ظهورها إلى اليوم هي القمع ومحاولة اسكات الحقيقة وإعاقة التقدم العلمي.

العرب وعقدة الأنثى

أجد أن الآيات الأولى من سورة النجم هي أجمل ما ورد في القرآن على الإطلاق من ناحية اللغة
والمعنى. وكلما قرأت هذه الآيات رأيتني مشدودا بسحرها، فأخذت بتردادها مرارا وتكرارا. ربما ما أعجبني في هذه الآيات هي الثقة البالغة التي يتكلم بها محمد ويحاول أن يضفيها عن صدقية الوحي وبطريقة شعرية أو نثرية أخّاذة. مثلا:

٢. ما ضل صاحبكم وما غوى
٣. وما ينطق عن الهوى
١١. ما كذب الفؤاد ما رأى
١٧. ما زاغ البصر وما طغى

وأتساءل أحيانا إذا كانت هذه الآيات تؤجج فيّ أنا الملحد الشعور بالإعجاب والإنبهار فكيف بوقعها على المؤمن بالقرآن ككلام الله؟ طبعا لا أتعجب إن استحوذت هذه الآيات على قلب المؤمن وعقله وجميع حواسه.

الغريب في الأمر أن بعد الآية رقم ١٧ (ما زاغ البصر وما طغى) تتخذ سورة النجم منحى مختلفا كليا لا يتناسج أبدا مع روعة الآيات السابقة. بل يشكل ما بعد الآية ١٧ برأيي أبشع ما ورد في القرآن وأحد أدمغ الأدلة على عدم ألوهيته. لننظر مثلا إلى الآيات التالية من سورة النجم:

١٩. أفرأيتم اللات والعزى
٢٠. ومناة الثالثة الأخرى
٢١. ألكم الذكر وله الأنثى
٢٢. تلك إذا قسمة ضيزى

إن موضوع معاملة المرأة في الإسلام هو أحد أهم النواحي الإسلامية المثيرة للجدل وأبرز المآخذ على الإسلام كشريعة إلاهية. وغالبا ما تتمركز الإنتقادات للإسلام حول أمور كالحجاب، ضرب المرأة، تعدد الزوجات، الإرث، شهادة المرأة أمام القاضي، إلخ. ولكنها تغفل هذه الآيات من سورة النجم مع انها تشكل إدانة واضحة للخالق لا يستطيع المتفذلكين من علماء الدين ردّها أو الإجابة عنها. فهنا يستنكر الله إتخاذ آلهة غيره، وبالتحديد إدعاء أن اللات والعزى ومناة هم بنات إله من آلهة قريش. العجيب الغريب في الأمر ان استنكار الله يتموضع حول كون هذه الآلهة إناثا (لا ذكورا). أي أن الله جعل من هذه المناسبة فرصة لاحتقار المرأة واعتبارها مخلوقا دونيا حتى ولو أن الفرصة لهذا الإحتقار لم تكن في محلها أصلا. وكان بالأجدى لله هنا أن يتنبه إلى مسألة الإشراك به وهي أهم جدا من تفاصيل ثانوية كجنس الآلهة. فالإشراك بالله واعتبار أنه إتخذ ولدا هو كفر بحد ذاته. ما قل هذا الكفر أو زاده جنس المولود. هنا يتناسى الله أحد أهم ركائز الإسلام (عدم الإشراك بالله الذي لم يلد ولم يولد) ليركز غيظه على كون جنس آلهة قريش إناثا.

إذا تكشف هذه الآيات عن نظرة فلسفية مجردة للمرأة لا تتأثر بالزمان والمكان. فربما يستطييع علماء الدين تبريير العديد من الإساءات الواردة في القرآن للمرأة من خلال ربط ما ورد في القرآن بالظروف الإجتماعية المواكبة لزمن إنزال الآية. نسمع مثلا أن الإسلام أعطى للمرأة مكانة أفضل مما كانت لها عليه في الجاهلية (مع انني لا أتفق مع هذه المقولة). ولكن كيف يبرر العلماء تغافل الله عن الإشراك به، وتهجمه على المرأة بهذه الطريقة البغيضة الغير مبررة تماما؟ ولا يتوقف غضب الله على المرأة في سورة النجم عند الآيات ٢٢-١٩ بل يكمل:

٢٧. إن الذين لا يؤمنون بالآخرة ليسمون الملائكة تسمية الأنثى

بالنسبة لإله القرآن إن إضفاء إسم أنثى على الملائكة هي إساءة بحد ذاتها! إذا ليست المرأة فقد مخلوقا دونيا، ولكن لغويا أيضا الإسم المؤنث هو أدنى من الإسم المذكر. نسأل هنا ماذا لو كانت العربية كلغات أخرى لا تفرق بين المذكر والمؤنث؟ أي إذا كانت اللغة مجرد آداة لإيصال فكرة، فما قيمة هذه الآية التي تعتبر أضفاء صفة الأنوثة على مخلوقات غير إنسانية كالملائكة نوعا من الهرطقة.

ربما تنبثق هذه الرؤية الإسلامية المحقرة للأنثى من عوامل نفسية لكاتب (أو كاتبي) القرآن. نعلم مثلا أن محمد لم ينجب ذكورا وكان هذا الأمر سببا لمعايرته من قبل أعدائه من قريش، مما اضطر الله لإنزال سورة الكوثر ليواسي بها محمد ويخفف من آلامه النفسية:

إنا أعطيناك الكوثر، فصلي لربك وانحر، إن شانئك هو الأبتر.

وربما ان لسورة النجم كغيرها من سور القرآن عدة مؤلفين مما يفسر هذا التناقض الغريب بين روعة الجزء الأول وبشاعة الجزء الثاني. في كلتا الحالتين تبين هذه الآيات بدون شك عن عقدة نفسية دفينة تجاه الأنثى أكانت مربوطة بشخص محمد أو مجتمع بكامله. وما زال مجتمعنا العربي اليوم حاملا لهذه العقدة الموروثة بسب تمسكنا بمعتقدات بدائية بالية.

الله وهتلر

غالبا ما نسمع أن الأديان السماوية قد أتت كرسالة من الخالق لنشر المحبة والتسامح والأخلاق الحميدة بين البشر. وإذا تحاورت مع المتدينين عن مساوئ الديانات والحروب التي نتجت عنها، وجدّت المدافعين عن هذه الديانات يدّعون أن من قام بقتل البشر بإسم الدين هو خارج عن الدين. أي أن بن لادن وجورج بوش مثلا لا يمثلون الإسلام والمسيحية، وهما ديانتا حب وسلام وتسامح. وبعد تفكير ملي وجدّي إستنتجت زيف هذه المقولة، بل أكثر من ذلك توصلت إلى أن الديانات الإبراهيمية بالذات هي أشبه بالنازية من حيث المعتقد.

للنازية رؤية محددة في كيفية الحكم. تتميز هذه الرؤية بالإستبداد والتوتاليتارية. فمن لم يؤمن بالعقيدة النازية أصبح مدانا وملاحقا متى استلم النازيون مقالد السلطة. ولقد تجسدت هذه التوتاليتارية بأبغض أشكالها من خلال المحرقة اليهودية. فقد آمن هتلر بدونية اليهود (وشعوب أخرى) وشرّع بذلك بتصفيتهم لا لذنب أو جرم إقترفوه، بل فقط لإختلاف عقيدتهم وجنسهم (ولو كان للعرب والأتراك تواجد كبير في المانيا في تلك الحقبة لما توانى هتلر عن إبادتهم أيضا).

أما الديانات الإبراهيمية فتؤمن جميعا بوجود مكان في الحياة الأخرى يسمى بالنار أو جهنم، يعذب فيه بعض البشر. ولو كان هذا المكان حكرا على من ارتكب جرائم فظيعة في الحياة ما كانت المقاربة بالنازية في محلها. ولكن إذا تمعنّا في دراسة هذه الأديان وجدنا أن الجرائم كالقتل والإغتصاب والسرقة تعتبر أخطاء ثانوية لا تحْرم مرتكبيها من الغفران. أما الخطأ الأكبر الذي لا يغتفر فهو عدم الإيمان بذلك المعتقد. ففي المسيحية مثلا نرى بوضوح أن المسيح هو الطريق الوحيد للخلاص (يوحنا 14:6 قال له يسوع انا هو الطريق والحق والحياة ليس احد ياتي الى الاب الا بي). وقد تجادلت مرارا مع إنجيليين مسيحيين يؤمنون أن من مات وهو غير مؤمن بالمسيح فهو ذاهب حتما إلى النار مهما كان صالحا في حياته. نجد نفس المقاربة طبعا في الإسلام حيث يغفر الله ما شاء من ذنوب إلا "أن يشرك به".

تصبح الصورة الآن أكثر وضوحا. فهذه المعتقدات الإبراهيمية لا تهتم بإنتاج مجتمع صالح كما يدّعي المتدينون بقدر ما تهتم بفرض عقيدتها على البشر تحت طائلة الملاحقة القانونية... أي التهديد بالحرق في نار أبدية. ولو كان الأمر غير ذلك لما احتجنا إلى هذه الديانات في الأساس، لأن ما يعرف بالأخلاق الإنسانية التي تحدد الخطأ والصواب وجدت عند قدماء اليونان قبل ظهور الأديان بمئات السنين. الديانات الإبراهيمية إذا كالنازية تتطلّب الطاعة التامة من البشر، وتعاقب من لا يؤمن بها بمحرقة تفوق محرقة هتلر بشاعة.

يمكن أن نُبَيّن إختلافا واحدا بين محرقة هتلر والمحرقة الإلهية يكمن بأن الأولى هي محرقة حقيقية تواجدت على الأرض في زمن ما، أما الثانية فهي محرقة وهمية لا توجد إلا في عقول المتدينين. ولا يُبرئ هذا الإختلاف الأديان من الصفة النازية للسبب التالي. إِنّ النيّة في تجريد البشر من إِنسانيتهم ليصبح "حرقهم" مشروعا (بل ويمثل عدالة إنسانية كانت أم إلاهية) موجودة عند الفئتين. صحيح أن معظم المتدينين لا ينادون بإنشاء محارق على الأرض للتخلص من أعدائهم، ولكن مجرد الإيمان بفكرة النار يُعد خطوة أولى ومهمة لتقبل مبدأ المحاكمة والتنكيل بالآخر. ونستطيع أن نستخلص من التاريخ كيف استخدمت هذه الفكرة من قبل المسيحيين لإستباحة قارة باكملها هي أميركا اللاتينية وإبادة سكانها الأصليين. أضف أننا إذا نظرنا إلى أوروبا العصور الوسطى لوجدنا أن المحرقة الإلهية لم تكن وهمية بل كانت محرقة حقيقية استخدمت للتخلص من كل من عارض سلطة الكنيسة (وهي طبعا تمثل سلطة الله على الأرض). أما الأمثلة الإسلامية من الفتوحات إلى يومنا هذا فهي كثيرة وليست بأفضل.

نستخلص أن كلّ من آمن بالنار معتبرا أنها مصير طبيعي لكلّ من لم يتبع ملته فهو لا يختلف كثيرا عن النازيين في المعتقد. أما الملحدون الإنسانيون (atheist humanists) وأنا أحدهم فلا مقدرة عندنا لتبرير التنكيل والتعذييب بأي إنسان مهما كانت خطيئته، لأن ذلك يتعارض مع مبدأ الإنسانية. على العكس فنحن نتفهم تعصب المتدينين وعمى بصيرتهم على أنه نتاج هذه البيئة الدينية ذات المعتقدات البدائية الموروثة أبا عن جد. وفي النهاية أقول لرفاقي المتدينين: لا أتمنى لكم عذابا أبديا بل أتمنى لكم تنوّر بصيرتكم.

Who is more moral: Satan or Allah?

There are numerous verses in the Quran that have gained much attention and debate for dealing with the issue of the status of women in Islam. Few examples are the infamous verse 4:34 which allows the beating of wives, verse 2:282 which decrees that the eyewitness testimony of a woman in front of a judge is worth half that of a man, and verse 24:31 which is interpreted as a call for women to wear hijab (veil). Islamic scholars offer a multitude of responses to these verses. The majority accept the literal interpretation of the verses. This group of scholars truly believe that the role of a woman in society is as mother and a home keeper only. They accept that God has ordered women to cover up their faces and has allowed men in certain situations to beat their wives as punishment. They do not admit that such views are degrading to women, but rather justify these views as God's special rules to protect women for their own good. Moderate and progressive scholars on the other hand come up with elaborate interpretations to lessen or subdue the harsh message of these verses (though as discussed in an earlier article, I personally believe that no interpretation no matter how smart it is can justify verse 4:34 when considering that it is spoken by a deity).

The subject of this article are verses 53:19-53:22 of the Quran which reveal God's great contempt for women in a pure philosophical and abstract sense, such that even the most moderate and enlightened Islamic scholar would not be able of defending the views conveyed in these verses. I have to mention here that verses 53:19-53:22 have gained much attention for all the wrong reasons. They are at the heart of the satanic verses story, which claims that the original version of verses 53:19-53:22 was inspired by Satan before Muhammad acknowledged his mistake and replaced them with the proper (Godly) version. First, let's examine verses 53:19-53:22 as they appear in the Quran today (i.e. the Godly version not the unofficial satanic version):

أفرأيتم اللات والعزى
ومناة الثالثة الأخرى
ألكم الذكر وله الأنثى
تلك إذا قسمة ضيزى

and the English translation:

Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-Uzza
And Manat, the third, the other?
Are yours the males and His the females?
That indeed were an unfair division!

Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat are three Goddesses worshiped by Quraysh (the prophet's tribe) and believed to be the daughters of God. We know for sure that they were highly esteemed Gods of Quraysh as evident from the pre-Islamic names (e.g. the name of one of the uncles of the prophet was Abdul-Al-Uzza, meaning slave of Al-Uzza). In these verses, God seems to take offense with worshiping of the three Goddesses specifically because of the claim that God has daughters (as opposed to the men of Quraysh who have sons).

I will argue that these verses are even more demeaning to women than verse 4:34 that allows the beating of wives. This is because all the issues surrounding lives of women whether beating of a disobedient wife or allowing polygamy can be understood in terms of the cultural habits of the time. This is not the case with verses 53:19-53:22, in which turning the subject of the worship of the three Goddesses into a gender issue was totally unwarranted. To further highlight this Godly blunder consider the first and most important pillar of Islam: to believe in one and only one God that neither was born to anyone nor had children (He begetteth not nor was begotten). Claiming that God has three daughters (or sons) is sufficient to make one a kafir (Infidel). God indeed did not need to turn this into a gender issue. However, it really seems that God was so fixated on demeaning women that he forgot about the first pillar of Islam and went out of his way just to declare how unfair it is for one to have daughters as only children. The sad thing is that the Arab world today (1400 years after the birth of Islam) still follows in the footsteps of their God by favoring sons over daughters in every aspect of life.

Now for the sake of comparison, let's examine the unofficial satanic verses which are considered by some Muslims to be the work of the devil:

Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-Uzza
And Manat, the third, the other?
These are the exalted cranes (intermediaries)
Whose intercession is to be hoped for.

The claim here is that in a moment of weakness Muhammad acknowledged the special status of the three Goddesses and approved of praying to them. Muslims are embarrassed by this version of the verses and many refute the basis of the satanic verses story altogether. I see a rather different picture. Here we have a God who is embarrassed by the claim that he has daughters and a devil who encourages praying for female Goddesses. I would pick the devil any day over such a sexist God! Who would you pick?

Thou shall beat your wife

The treatment of women in Islam is a controversial and frequently debated topic. Islamic societies are generally perceived as being oppressive towards women. The notion of Muslim women as oppressed second class citizens is most certainly reinforced in the minds of Westerners by the image of a woman in a burqa (religious dress which covers body and face). Defenders of Islam claim that the subjugation of women has cultural roots, not religious ones. They often use arguments along these lines to exonerate Islam from any wrong doing while laying the blame solely on cultural practices.

In this and upcoming posts, I will present my personal research of this issue based purely on the Quran, which is accepted by all sects of Islam as the untampered word of God, delivered (recited) by his prophet Muhammad some 1500 years ago. In addition, Muslims believe that the Quran is eternal (timeless); that is to say its teachings are applicable to past, present and future generations. Since Arabic is my native language, my research is not based on translated scripture but on the one and only Arabic version of Quran . The Quran devotes a whole chapter to women. In this post, I examine the infamous verse 4:34:

الرجال قوامون على النساء بما فضل الله بعضهم على بعض وبما أنفقوا من أموالهم فالصالحات قانتات حافظات للغيب بما حفظ الله واللاتي تخافون نشوزهن فعظوهن واهجروهن في المضاجع واضربوهن فإن أطعنكم فلا تبغوا عليهن سبيلا إن الله كان عليا كبيرا

which I found the following to be a reasonable translation of:

Men are guardians of women because God has favored some more than others and because they spend out of their wealth. Righteous women are devoted and to guard what God has guarded even though out of sight. As for those on whose part you fear ill-will and nasty conduct, admonish them, separate them in beds, beat them. But if they obey you, then seek nothing against them. Behold, God is most high and great.

The verse essentially conveys the following messages:

- First, it states that men are guardians (custodians, protectors, etc.) of women. It further explains that this is due to God's preference (God has favored some more than others) and also because of economic reasons as men are the providers (…they spend out of their wealth).

- Second it advices men on how to act if they fear that their women will engage in nasty conduct. It is not entirely clear what is meant by nasty conduct. Nevertheless, this is not important for the discussion. Let's assume that a woman is about to commit adultery, which is considered to be among the most offensive acts in Arabic societies. Men are first to advice or warn their women. The next course of action if the first proved to be ineffective, is to stop having sex with them. Finally, men are to beat their disobedient wives. Although the Quran is written in classical Arabic, in which many of the used words are not common today, there is no question about use of the verb "to beat" (daraba). daraba is a basic and commonly used verb in classical Arabic, Modern Arabic, as well as all dialects of Arabic.

Obviously, I have many problems with this verse. Most importantly, the fact that this verse gives legal (according to Islamic Sharia law) pretexts for men to beat their wives. Not only that. It gives this right to the man who fears that his wife will commit nasty conduct. Therefore women are to be punished even before they commit the crime! This verse defies any sense of justice. How absurd it is to believe that God instructs violence against women. Yet all Muslims believe that the Quran is the true word of God! In an attempt to understand this obvious contradiction I looked into what Muslim scholars say about this issue. The majority claim that God only gave men the right to beat their wives as a last resort and only in one case (fearing they will commit lewd behavior). I did not find such explanation satisfying since I believe that men and women are truly equal and that violence of any sort should not be an option in a relationship. Other scholars explain that beating in this context is to be gentle and not intended to cause any physical harm. Again it sounds ridiculous in the first place to give men this kind of authority given that it has great potential for being abused.

A clear picture is starting to emerge. This verse could be explained in the context of a law written and created by man (not God). 1500 years ago in the Arabic peninsula (and elsewhere) man had the power. Women were mere objects. Man created laws that do not make sense today and attributed them to God (another of man's creation). As a person who has a sense of what is righteous and just based on human knowledge and experience, this verse presents the most compelling evidence that the Quran is not the word of God.

My problem is not with the Muslims who strictly adhere to the Quran and do beat their wives because God allowed for that. It is with the moderate Muslims who do not beat their wives! This silent (accomplice) majority is causing far more damage by not challenging the authenticity of such verse. They teach their kids that the Quran as a whole is the true word of God, and by that they pass this myth along generation after generation. It is inevitable that within every brain washed generation some will look more closely into the Quran and adhere strictly to it because it is the true word of God. This line of thinking goes far beyond beating of women. It is the reason why second generation Muslims in the West who are raised by moderate nonpracticing Muslim parents are easily lured into extremism. All their parents had to do is plant this one idea (the divinity of the Quran) in them as kids. They grow up with this idea and they eventually find someone more knowledgeable in Islam than their parents (a friend, or an Imam in a Mosque) to teach them about true Islam and thereby convert them into radicals.

Intolerance: The basic tenet of today's Islam

There seems to be much violence associated with Islam: beheading, stoning, suicide bombings, honor crimes, all are common in Muslim societies. But is Islam unique in this sense?

A look back at Middle Age Europe suggests that the answer is No. At one point Christianity ruled Europe; Dissenting voices were accused of heresy and sentenced to death by cruel medieval methods. I see many similarities between Middle Age Europe and today's Muslim societies. Critics of Islam are called infidels (كفار). They face being murdered (either officially by the state or unofficially by the people). Salman Rushdie is a famous example because of the infamous fatwa (religious verdict) calling for his death, issued by Ayatollah Khomeini. But Salman Rushdie is a well known example because he is a Westerner (British). Many Arabic and Muslim thinkers who publicly criticized Islam or questioned some of its practices were assassinated without getting much media coverage. To put this into perspective, just think of this society that was outraged at some silly cartoons in a Danish newspaper. What would be the reaction of this society say if someone within it questioned the authenticity of a certain Quranic verse - even from an academic viewpoint? So in some sense Islam is today what Christianity was 500 years ago. Except that today we live in a global world. The problems of Islam aren’t confined to the Muslim world. We see these problems around us to some extent wherever we live. The ease of travel (migration) and advances in telecommunication have caused these problems to be more visible to the outside world and as a result have accelerated the clash of cultures.

What is the solution?

Again a look back at history… Christianity did not give up its power voluntarily. It took centuries of struggle and blood shed for Europe to become secular. Islam is no different. Change is not simple. There has to be a struggle initiated by Muslims themselves against Islamic dogma. The struggle begins with a serious critic of the Quran not as a holy book but as a script written by man. This is something no Muslim person dares to tackle even the very moderate and open minded. But truth has to be told that the Quran is man's creation… and just like the bible, it preaches love and hate at the same time. It is up to Muslims to do without the hateful verses that preach violence. Muslims have to realize that this script was written by and for people who lived 1500 years ago in the Arabic peninsula. It is therefore no longer compatible with our times. If they wish to keep their faith they have to reinvent it… just as Christians did to some extent (or more accurately were forced to do).

Early memories of a nonbeleiver

As a child, my dad taught me Arabic through recitation of the Quran. One of my most vivid memories of this experience was reading surat al-naba’ سورة النبأ (chapter 78), which contains some descriptive verses on Hell and the suffering facing nonbelievers there. My immediate reaction was “God must be bluffing, such place does not exist”. I did not hesitate in sharing these thoughts with my dad, who being an atheist (I did not know this fact at the time) was proud of my reaction.

Today, as a grown up who long declared himself a nonbeliever, I still find myself linked to Islam. I am linked to Islam through my Middle Eastern features, my culture and most important, through the Arabic language that I love and that I find inseparable from Islam (after all Islam is responsible for preserving the Arabic language in it original form for over 1500 years). I am also linked to Islam as a global citizen who is witnessing the ongoing conflicts in the world... one of which is the so called “clash of civilizations” between Islam and the West.

The intent of this Blog is to discuss social/political/religious issues from the perspective of a person who is tied to both Western and Islamic cultures. Many of the topics that I will address are considered taboos in Islamic societies. They are unchallenged beliefs that are central to the faith and accepted as truths. Since the path to enlightenment begins with questioning the givens, there will be no taboos here.
